“That’s Tiger stuff”

Johnny Miller said it, and there is absolutely no denying it. What Rory did today was Tiger-like, from the swing to the attitude.  He was in control from the start of day one and never lost focus.  From the first hole to the final round he made critics believers, controlling every wedge, bombing every tee shot and hitting fairway after fairway.  If you were going to compare him to any man to play this game, it could only be one: Tiger.

That being said, let’s be mindful of Rory as his own entity and not label him as the “Tiger killer” or anything of that sort.  Tiger got a lot of attention as a young pro because he made it clear he wanted it, and wanted to be considered the greatest.  It’s part of what made him so lovable early on, and part of what made him a lot of money (both as an endorser and champion).

Rory also didn’t quite do what Tiger did.  While their final scores are unbelievable for a major, Tiger blew away his competition by 15 strokes, and shot a 12 under when no one else in the field could make par.  Not to take away from Rory, but Jason Day also shot 8 under today, which puts him 3rd on the all time list for the U.S. Open’s lowest scores, so his dominance over the field was in some ways a demonstration of his ability to put away the competition early more so than his ability to outright dominate the field.

None of this really matters right now though.  Today, Rory McIlroy is a champion, and deservedly so.  Congratulations Rory, you’ve made a fan out of me the last 4 days.

  1. I wasn’t too sure of how Rory would respond after his Masters performance. I believed that he might be another Sergio Garcia and that golf would have to wait even longer for another star to arrive. I guess not. McIlroy is a class act and has the kind of talent that has almost no ceiling to it. The sky is the limit for this guy and it couldn’t happen to a better person. He reacted so well to the situation after the Masters and was a good guy all the way despite the blow out win this weekend. It should to be fun to see this kid perform for the next decade. Let’s hope for the sake of golf that he continues it. Maybe see him and Tiger go toe-to-toe? Also, you think you could check out my blog cuz I’d love to hear what you have to say http://chrisross91.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/just-what-the-doctor-ordered/
